On 4th March, 1915, the 3rd Royal Fusiliers battalion of 85 Brigade, 28th Division moved into the trenches to the east of Kemmel in Belgium where they remained until relieved on 16th March. When the Battle of Neuve Chapelle began on 10th March, a few miles to the south, 3rd Royal Fusiliers were ordered to ‘display considerable activity’ in an attempt to divert German troops from there and in return they became the targets of German retaliation which essentially meant a lot more shelling. On 12th March, the day on which Charles Davis was killed, there was also an attack by 7 Brigade against Spanbroekmolen, just to the right of 85 Brigade and this also resulted in more retaliatory shell fire. |
